knelt beside Oliver and brushed his hair away from his forehead.
“Sweetheart, I need you to know something,” she said.
“You have done absolutely nothing wrong.”
Oliver glanced toward Nathan.
“Is he my dad?”
Elena closed her eyes for a moment.
She wanted to shield him from the confusion.
She wanted to send everyone away and give him a quiet room, his favorite blanket, and the kind of explanation a six-year-old could understand.
But she would not lie to him.
“I’m trying to understand the truth, sweetheart.
We are going to talk about it together.”
Nathan stepped forward again.
“Oliver,” he began, “I’m sorry.”
The boy moved closer to Elena.
“Why didn’t you come see me?”
Nathan’s mouth opened, then closed.
“I made mistakes.”
“Did you know where I lived?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Mom took care of me?”
Nathan looked at Elena.
“Yes.”
Oliver’s eyes filled with tears.
“Then why didn’t you come?”
There were nearly two hundred people in the room, but Nathan suddenly seemed to be standing alone in an empty building.
“I was afraid,” he said.
Elena rose slowly.
“You were afraid? You were afraid while I sat beside this child through fevers.
You were afraid while I held him after his first day of school.
You were afraid while I answered his questions about a father who never came.
And you let me believe you were the person who would help us build a family.”
Nathan reached for her hand.
“I love you.”
Elena pulled away.
“Then you should have trusted me with the truth.”
“I thought we could deal with it after the wedding.”
She stared at him in disbelief.
“After the wedding? You planned to make me your wife before telling me you were Oliver’s biological father? You planned to let me promise my life to you while you withheld something this important?”
“I wanted to protect what we had.”
“No,” Elena said.
“You wanted to protect what you wanted.”
She slipped the engagement ring from her finger and placed it on the small table beside the ceremony flowers.
The officiant stepped back.
Nathan’s mother began to cry.
Guests who had spent months praising the couple’s perfect relationship lowered their eyes.
Elena turned toward the room.
“There will be no wedding today.”
Then she took Oliver’s hand.
The boy looked up at her, frightened and uncertain.
“Are you still my mom?”
Elena dropped to her knees and pulled him into her arms.
“Always,” she whispered.
“Nothing anyone tells you today can change that.”
Oliver buried his face against her shoulder.
“Okay, Mom.”
Those two words mattered more than every vow Nathan had planned to make.
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE WEDDING
Elena left the ballroom with Oliver beside her.
Mara followed, but she kept her distance until they reached a quiet room away from the guests.
For several minutes, no one spoke.
Finally, Mara explained what she remembered about Nathan’s disappearance and the photograph.
She acknowledged that she had made painful choices, too.
She had been unable to give Oliver the stability he needed, and she had consented to his adoption because she believed Elena could provide it.
“I didn’t come here to take him away from you,” Mara said.
“I know you’re his mother in every way that matters to his daily life.
