A Little Girl Stopped His Wedding With One Photograph

visit.

I recorded it because I was scared nobody would believe me.”

The nurse warned them that Marisol needed rest before surgery.

Adrian wanted answers, but he could see her exhaustion.

He reached for her hand.

“One question.

Is Lucía my daughter?”

Marisol met his eyes.

“Yes.”

Lucía stared at him.

Adrian did not pretend that resemblance or Marisol’s word constituted legal proof.

That would come later with a properly administered DNA test.

But something inside him had already shifted.

He crouched beside Lucía.

“Whatever the test eventually says, you did the bravest thing I’ve seen anyone do today.”

Lucía wiped her face.

“Are you mad I ruined your wedding?”

Adrian almost laughed, but the sound caught in his throat.

“No.”

The door opened again.

Rafael Vega stood there in his tuxedo.

Celeste was behind him.

Rafael saw the envelope in Adrian’s hand and stopped.

That reaction told Adrian more than any denial could have.

“Get out,” Adrian said.

“Son, you don’t understand what happened.”

“Then explain the sixty-thousand-dollar payment.”

Rafael’s face tightened.

Celeste’s eyes snapped toward him.

“What payment?”

Adrian held up the document.

“The one my father offered Marisol to disappear when she was pregnant.”

Rafael lowered his voice.

“This isn’t the place.”

“You chose the place nine years ago.”

Marisol turned her face away.

Lucía clung more tightly to her hand.

Rafael noticed the child watching him and seemed to lose some of his aggression.

“Adrian, I was protecting you.

You were twenty-four.

The Madrid expansion was about to determine whether the company survived.

You had your entire future ahead of you.”

“So you stole it?”

“I gave you a chance to build it.”

“By making me believe she abandoned me?”

Rafael glanced toward Marisol.

“She could have taken the money and started over comfortably.”

“I didn’t take it,” Marisol said.

“I know.”

The admission silenced everyone.

Adrian stared at his father.

“So it’s true.”

Rafael realized too late what he had confessed.

Celeste slowly removed her engagement ring.

Rafael looked at her.

“Don’t be dramatic.”

Celeste’s expression hardened.

“You intercepted a pregnant woman’s attempts to reach your son for years, and you think I’m being dramatic?”

She placed the ring in Adrian’s palm.

He looked at her, stunned.

“Celeste—”

“Not because of her,” she said quietly.

“And not because of Lucía.”

Her eyes filled, but she remained composed.

“I love you.

But twenty minutes ago we were about to promise each other a life built on what we believed was true.

Your entire past just changed.

You have a daughter who met you less than an hour ago.

Her mother may be going into surgery.

You shouldn’t be deciding whether to marry me tonight.

You should be deciding what kind of father you’re going to be tomorrow.”

Adrian closed his fingers around the ring.

There was nothing he could say that would make her wrong.

Celeste knelt in front of Lucía.

“You didn’t ruin anything, sweetheart.

Do you understand?”

Lucía nodded uncertainly.

“Good.”

Celeste stood and walked out.

Rafael turned toward Adrian.

“You’re going to throw away your future over one emotional night?”

Adrian picked up the recorder.

“No.

I’m finally going to find out what you threw away for me.”

Hospital security escorted Rafael from the unit after he refused to leave voluntarily.

Marisol went
